Pale Blue Magazine, a collectible design platform, publishes an interview with Mia Kim ahead of the opening of Evolving Forms at St Vincents.
She describes how the show began. St Vincents invited the studio to curate and edit its existing pieces. She and Paul Trussler came back with the idea of a series of new work that would be both essential and transformational, adaptable to different moments in life, and took it to Henri Delbarre and Geraldine Jackman at the gallery. It became the studio's first solo show.
On material, she sets out the studio position directly. There is excellent fashion and architecture built on complexity and exceptional materials, but both fields accumulate unnecessary complication. Sophistication comes from eliminating what is not needed through simple, intelligent solutions and fine craftsmanship.
She is asked about the meals and gatherings planned around the work during the run, and answers that there is no agenda beyond watching people use the pieces as intended. Asked about moving from Korea to Canada to Paris, she declines to name one formative place and says all of them brought her here.
The piece describes the table system as transforming like a well-edited wardrobe, shifting between an impromptu dinner and an afternoon workspace while holding its character. It also records that Mia Kim launched her own line before Studio Goons.
