Five Points Console
The Five Points Console is part of a collection designed for the solo exhibition Evolving Forms at St Vincents in Antwerp.
The collection explores adaptability and spatial flexibility through a modular dining ensemble: three tables, a console and two dining tables, that can be configured in nine distinct arrangements to accommodate shifting uses and environments, from dining and work to play.
The name refers to Le Corbusier’s Five Points of Modern Architecture, and to two of them in particular: the free plan and the pilotis. What we took is not a silhouette but a permission. Lifting a building onto pilotis separated structure from enclosure and released the plan from the position of its walls. At furniture scale that means the supports no longer have to sit where convention expects them.
The console stands on three legs rather than four. Each has to be scaled and positioned, and every position changes where the weight goes, so the piece is resolved in drawing before it is resolved in wood. Load paths are worked out first and the leg positions follow from them.
The top is a separate plane, free from the constraints of the structure but constrained by the scale of the system. That separation is the point. It is what allows the console to sit inside a nine-part arrangement without dictating the pieces around it.
Hand-built and hand-finished in our atelier in Paris. The plywood edge is left exposed at every cut. The laminations read as rhythm and as a record of how the piece is built.
The Free Plan Bench takes the same permission. Studio Goons is a Paris-based collectible furniture and design atelier founded in 2020 by architect Paul Trussler and designer Mia Kim.
