Free Plan Bench
The Free Plan Bench by Studio Goons is designed from the free plan, one of Le Corbusier’s Five Points of Modern Architecture.
In the free plan the structure is separated from the enclosure, so the layout of a building is no longer dictated by where the walls have to stand. Load moves to columns, and the plan is released. We translated that at furniture scale. Two planes define the work: the horizontal seat and the floor it occupies. Between them, the supports operate independently of conventional alignment. The legs are positioned without hierarchy, which keeps the composition stable while resisting the symmetry a bench usually falls into.
Every structural connection is concealed. Removing visible joinery reduces the object to its geometry and moves attention from how it was assembled to how it occupies space. That is the opposite decision to the Flat Pack Chair, and it is made for the same reason: the rule the piece is working under. We cite architecture by tracing what was taken from it, not by naming it. What was taken here is specific. Not a silhouette, and not a period reference, but a structural permission: that supports do not have to be where convention expects them, provided the load is genuinely resolved.
