Flat Pack Chair
The Flat Pack Chair is a dining chair by Studio Goons in birch plywood, designed from half a sheet of birch plywood and assembled without visible fasteners.
It was designed for an exhibition in Los Angeles, and the constraint was travel. The chair had to fit inside a flat pack box, fly internationally as a carry-on, and be assembled on arrival without complicated tools. That one restriction produced the entire design. Working from half a single sheet meant the whole chair had to be resolved in two dimensions before it existed in three. Every component had to nest, every angle had to be cuttable, and the assembly sequence had to be clear.
The chair no longer has the original constraint of traveling as flatpack furniture, but the logic did not change. It is still designed from a half sheet, still assembled without visible fasteners, and still legible as a set of flat components that became a chair.
Restriction is freedom. Decide the rules, then design within them. This is the clearest example of that in the collection, because here the rules were physical and non-negotiable.
Birch plywood has been our primary material since the studio began in 2020. It is dimensionally stable, consistently available, and it shows its own construction at every cut edge. An exposed edge is more honest than a veneer. Four Flat Pack Chairs fit exactly around the Simple Table.
