Art Rocker
The Art Rocker is a functional rocking chair by Studio Goons that sits between sculpture and furniture.
It traces back to the Whitney. Early in Paul’s architecture education in Toronto, a trip to New York put him in front of work by Richard Artschwager and Wade Guyton, including a chair rendered as a rectangular box with a veneer illustrating the chair itself. He kept a photograph of it on his desk, drew an arc along the bottom edge, and thought it would be interesting to make it rock. The prototype went into the house and stayed. What we learned from living with it became the principle behind the piece: take simple techniques, materials and tools and push them to a very high degree of resolution. Both of those artists work with a deliberate plainness, and the results are exact.
The form stays restrained. Clean planes, controlled massing, and a single intervention. The lower edges are carved away from an otherwise austere volume, which introduces the rocking motion without adding a component. Nothing is attached to make it move. Material is removed.
That one move shifts the piece from static form to responsive object, and changes the relationship between the body and the structure holding it.
Rocking chairs are uncommon in contemporary interiors. This one repositions the typology inside a reduced architectural language, so the gesture stays quiet and the piece reads as proportion and balance rather than as nostalgia.
