Brace Bench
The Brace Bench carries the bracing logic of the Brace Chair by Studio Goons along a horizontal span. A chair braces over a short distance. A bench has to do the same work across a much longer one, without the seat back and without thickening the seat until it reads as a slab. That problem is the reason this piece exists. The answer was to keep the side planes and a subtle stretcher to do the structural work and let the seat span between them as a single element. It was drawn for a specific position in a room. At a table, below a window, or against a wall, where a bench is seen in elevation more often than in plan and the silhouette has to hold from the side. The Brace family began with the Brace Chair, named for the shear wall bracing system in architecture. It now includes the Brace Chair A with armrests, the Brace Chair AC with cushions in pure Italian wool, this bench, and the Brace Stool. Testing one principle across five typologies is how we know whether the principle was any good.
