Brace Stool
The Brace Stool is the smallest piece in the Brace family by Studio Goons, reducing the shear wall bracing principle to a single seated element.
At stool scale there is nowhere to hide. A chair has a back and a bench has length, and both give the eye somewhere else to go. A stool is seen entirely, from every side, usually from above, and often in the middle of a room rather than against a wall. That made this the hardest piece in the family to resolve and the most useful one to make. If the bracing geometry still reads as necessary at this size, the principle was sound.
Nothing is applied and nothing is concealed. The planes that brace the stool are the stool. What holds it up is visible from every angle in the room.
The Brace family began with the Brace Chair, named for the shear wall bracing system in architecture that determined its construction. It also includes the Brace Chair A, the Brace Chair AC with cushions in pure Italian wool, and the Brace Bench.
Restriction is how we work. Decide the rules, then design inside them. This stool is the point in the family where the rules were tightest.
