Original Stool
The Original Stool is the first piece Studio Goons made, an offcut seat on scrap timber legs.
The idea was simple. A shape left over from the woodshop, paired with scrap timber legs. Those elements were already geometric and already interesting, so the work was arrangement and finishing rather than design in the usual sense. It went straight home and into the living room. Something about it held.
We recognised a quality we could not yet articulate, and that recognition became the studio’s most important tool. Every piece since has been measured against it. If it is Goons, we know. If it is not, we know.
Every Original Stool is still made by templating and copying directly from that first one. There is no archived drawing. The physical object is the drawing, which means nothing is diluted across generations of production. That method comes from architecture. Paul spent five years with Frank Gehry in Los Angeles, where the most important objects in the office were the physical models. Gehry would sit with them for weeks, building and rebuilding by hand, and measurements were taken from the models even deep into construction. Final decisions were always made physically at the model, then translated into drawings and sent to the contractors.
The Original Stool works the same way at furniture scale. The name is literal. This is where the studio started, and it is the reference every later piece is checked against.
Studio Goons is a Paris-based collectible furniture and design atelier founded in 2020 by architect Paul Trussler and designer Mia Kim. Every work is made to order and hand-built by us, signed and numbered. See also the MM Stool and the Form Stool.
