Evolving Forms
A capsule exploring the shift from primitive to refined. Each piece begins in the same constructive logic and is then articulated differently, tracing a family resemblance across the set.
The studio’s first solo exhibition, at St Vincents in Antwerp, the gallery founded in 2016 by Henri Delbarre and Geraldine Jackman. 23 January to 23 March 2025.
Eight pieces, conceived as a dining collection rather than as individual objects. Three tables, a console and two dining tables, recombine into nine arrangements, so one set of components can hold a dinner, an office, a boardroom and any number of other functions. Five seating options were presented alongside.
The tables take their name from Le Corbusier’s Five Points of Modern Architecture, published in 1927 and built at Villa Savoye, and from two of them in particular, the free plan and the pilotis. What was taken is not a silhouette but a permission. Lifting a building onto pilotis separated structure from enclosure and released the plan from the position of its walls. At furniture scale that means supports no longer have to sit where convention expects them. The console stands on three legs rather than four, each scaled and positioned by where the weight travels, so the piece is resolved in drawing before it is resolved in wood.
The seating works the opposite way, from a single structural member outward. The Brace pieces take the shear wall, the diagonal that resists lateral movement in a frame, and make it the whole design. Side planes carry the load and the back extends down as the brace. Testing that across a chair, an armchair, a cushioned armchair, a bench and a stool is how the studio establishes whether a principle holds.
Built in birch plywood, with the laminated edge left exposed at every cut, and cushions in pure Italian wool. The scenography changed across the two months.
