Foundation Console
The Foundation Console is a console at architectural scale by Studio Goons, in birch plywood.
It reimagines our foundational form. The zigzag leg that carries the Standard Console is extended vertically here and wrapped around one full side, so it stops behaving as two separate legs and becomes a continuous enclosing structure. That change made a shelf possible. Because the geometry now encloses rather than supports, so we could introduce an intermediary level inside it. The shelf is accessible from one side only, which makes the console genuinely two-sided: open on one face, closed on the other.
The consequence is placement. It works against a wall, freestanding in a room, or as a low divider, and the orientation and scale is a decision the owner makes rather than one we make for them.
The horizontal plane is deliberately thickened. At this scale a thin top would have read as a shelf spanning between supports, which would have undone the reading of the piece as one structure. The mass is doing visual work as well as structural work. It is the first console we made that carries the weight of a room. The Foundation Console and the Foundation Bookshelf are the first two works in our freestanding series that celebrates our foundations.
