Foundation Bookshelf

The Foundation Bookshelf is a free-standing double-sided bookshelf by Studio Goons in birch plywood, resolved as a single load-bearing geometry.

It was designed for a private project commission in Cap Ferret. The brief needed a shelving unit that could stand free as divider of two rooms rather than against a wall, which meant it had to resolve on both faces and carry load without a back panel. Our answer was to take the zigzag leg that carries our benches and consoles and repeat it vertically. Stacked and mirrored, the same angle that braces a bench becomes the entire structure of a shelf.

The geometry is not decorative. It is what holds the unit square with nothing behind it. Because there is no back, the bookshelf is accessible from either side. It works as a room divider, as a freestanding library in the middle of a space, or conventionally against a wall.

It is the largest and heaviest piece we make, and the one most often designed to a specific room. Every one that has left the studio has been built to custom dimensions.

The Foundation Bookshelf and the Foundation Console are the first two works in our freestanding series. Both extend the language of the Standard Console and the Double Bench into a vertical structure.

Studio Goons is a Paris-based collectible furniture and design atelier founded in 2020 by architect Paul Trussler and designer Mia Kim. We work with architects and interior designers on commissioned and site-specific pieces, and this bookshelf came directly out of that work. Every work is made to order and hand-built by us, signed and numbered.
