AD Collector, Raw Refinement

AD Collector opens the editors' picks in issue 27 with Studio Goons, first of ten, under the heading Studio Goons, le raffinement brut, given in English as Studio Goons: Raw Refinement. Pages 46 and 47 of the bilingual hors-serie.

The piece places Mia Kim's years at Hermes and Chanel alongside Paul Trussler's at Gehry Partners, and describes the work as furniture of simple form in dark finishes, built from birch plywood and reclaimed beams.

It identifies the studio's stacking method, alternating cut sections through the legs, and reads the result as an accordion effect that is both playful and refined. The designs are described as forthright but meticulously executed, drawn from everyday life and from a wish to be surrounded by quality objects without white noise. It closes looking ahead to the studio's work in boiled wool, felt and vegetable leather.
