Spill Table (bi)
The Spill Table (bi) is a low coffee table by Studio Goons defined by continuous curvature, with two distinct finishes separating the top from the base.
The Spill Table originated as a commission for a low coffee table that could be sat at and moved around rather than only looked at.
The form is composed through soft transitions rather than sharp intersections, so the structure reads as fluid while staying entirely controlled. Surface and supports follow a single gesture, which creates continuity across the volume. The shape of the first spill table was drawn directly on a sheet of material with the client right in their living room. We brought it back to the studio and refined the shape to what you see today.
The bi version introduces two finishes between the top and the legs. That separates the planes and makes the geometry easier to read, without breaking the integrity of the original form. The contrast is measured on purpose. It brings out material character without disrupting the cohesion of the piece. Deciding how far to push that contrast was most of the work. Too little and the second finish looks like an inconsistency. Too much and the table reads as two objects stacked. The version we settled on is closer to the restrained end, because the form was never the problem.
