Building Stool
The Building Stool by Studio Goons is drawn from the logic of a small building rather than from the logic of furniture. The reference is the Nordic Pavilion at the Giardini della Biennale in Venice, specifically the way a set of vertical structural planes can define a space, filter light and create volume without enclosing anything. We wanted to find out what that produces at the scale of an object.
The whole is resolved as an architectural object, which means every element is carrying load and the assembly is the composition. It was worked out physically rather than on a screen. Built, tested, adjusted, rebuilt, until perfected.
That method comes directly from Paul’s five years with Frank Gehry in Los Angeles, where the most important objects in the office were the physical models. Gehry would sit with them periodically over months. Measurements were taken from the models even deep into construction, and final decisions were always made on the model before being translated into drawings. We work the same way. Every piece is resolved by hand before it becomes anything else.
The result draws attention to its own construction. It is geometrically simple, and it works as a seat, as a plinth, or as an object in a room on its own.
