Two pieces built from a step in the studio's own production process, celebrating a geometry that appears while furniture parts wait to be used.
Material is cut, then stacked in the workshop until it is needed, and the stack makes a repeating geometry nobody designed. The studio had looked at those stacks for two years before making anything from them. The capsule is what happens when an intermediary step is treated as a finished condition rather than as a step.
The two pieces were drawn at the same time. They are not a functional pair, and neither completes the other. They are one idea taken to two scales.
Both pieces are that stack resolved. Components are cut at 45 degrees and assembled so the pattern runs through the whole block, with the base held at 90. The process is expressed above and the structure is rigid below. Because the angle cuts vary, every side and every corner differs, and the variation is a product of the process rather than a decision made about it. Both pieces are commissioned often.
Reading it as a letter came after the fact, but it explains why the form holds. An M is a single stroke that goes up, down, up and down again without lifting. This action describes the profile of the top of the console and is doubled for the stool.
