Striped Oak Console
The Striped Oak Console by Studio Goons carrying our hand-scored and stained striping. The form underneath is our foundational console.
One horizontal plane on two angular zigzag supports, no apron, no stretcher, no visible fasteners. The language has not changed since it was one of the first pieces we made and sold.
The surface is what changes. Each stripe is scored into the wood and stained individually, by hand, over weeks in the atelier. It is not printed, pressed or applied. It is handcut, and it cannot be corrected so the process is slowly and carefully finished. We keep the technique because it cannot be rushed, cannot be scaled or mass produced, and as a highlight of our craftsmanship. It is also the clearest answer to anyone who reads our work as simple. The piece is straightforward. The execution is not. This non-traditional technique of scoring and staining requires precision and patience. Any mistake results in the destruction of the whole piece, so there is no version of the process that can be hurried.
The console is made in two standard scales and takes custom dimensions well. It is one of our most frequently commissioned forms. The same technique is carried at seat height on the Striped Bench.
