Some problems have an obvious answer. The seat is one plane. The legs are zigzag geometry. Hand-built to the same tolerances we hold every piece to.

What Kahn called "the nature of the thing”. the idea that every object contains the logic of its own resolution, applies here directly. The bench began as a single seat, a contained form for one. When the problem extended to two, we didn't redesign. We repeated the same system across a longer span. The zigzag legs continue their rhythm. No new element introduced. No new logic required. The form scales because the structure was already resolved. This is the discipline Kahn admired in the best buildings, not the addition of new ideas, but the confidence to extend an existing one without deviation. To resist the impulse to improve what doesn't need improving.
The same principle runs through everything we make. Reduce to what's necessary. Hold every edge and angle to an exact standard.

The nature of the thing

Every material and every structure has an inherent will. A brick "wants to be an arch,". A column "wants to carry."

The resolution is already inside the material and the structural logic.
