Animals Bench
The Animals Bench is created by devising a method that interprets a classic French stool and bench typology, the kind seen across the brocantes of Paris.
Instead of carving a mortise in the seat for each leg, we collect and cut studio scraps at a ten degree angle and carefully compose them in a patchwork that captures the leg. It saves the rigorous carving, fits tight, and it holds a reclaimed leg of any dimension, so almost nothing has to be refined away. Nothing is carved to fit.
We named the series Animals because it works like a biological process. A system that adapts to whatever material is available, absorbing waste back into itself while making no new waste. It is the bottom feeder of our studio. In the maritimes of Canada, where Paul grew up, the lobster was the classic tale of a bottom feeder that became prized. This is the same idea.
The wood comes from two places. Offcuts from the workshop, and solid timber collected from buildings being demolished. Because the method accommodates any dimension of leg, we barely process the reclaimed stock at all, which removes most of the waste that refining timber into components usually creates. The value is not in the material. It is in what you make of it.
At bench length the method becomes visible as a system rather than as a detail. Several legs of different sections are held along one plane, and the patchwork runs as a continuous band of end grain across the seat. The result is structurally simple and visually irregular, which is the point of the series.
Read against our earlier bench work, the Single Bench and the Double Bench, this piece arrives at the same problem from the opposite direction. Those benches resolve the leg as a structural solution. The Animals Bench resolves it by capture, and lets the salvaged material decide the composition.
