A pair of lounge chairs commissioned in black satin for a private residence in Paris, developed through drawings and models.
A commission for the founder of a fashion label, for her home in Paris. Her label is built on reduction and on garments made for daily use rather than for a season, which is close to the argument this chair makes in another material. She asked for two lounge chairs drawn from the proportions of a set of canonical modern chairs she had in mind. The design was developed collaboratively through drawings and models, working strictly against those proportions until the chair arrived at its own resolution. Delivered as a pair in black satin finish.
The chair is built from two components and was designed to test a simple concept. Seat and back are combined into one element, and that element is compressed between the arms and legs, which are also one element. Two components, one connection, nothing else. Reducing it that far is what produces the profile. From the front the chair reads as robust, which it is. From the side it is slim, because there is no frame, no stretcher and no upholstered mass to carry. The weight is in the structure rather than in the padding. The assemblage stays visible, the tectonics and the connection detail expressed rather than covered, so the logic of the chair can be read from any angle. An exposed edge is more honest than a veneer. An exposed joint is more honest than one which is hidden.
This commission led to the Lounge Chair 01 which can be found in our catalog and has since been one of our most ordered pieces. Upholstery is specified per commission and sits on the structure rather than being built into it, which keeps the chair serviceable.
